Black Obsidian at a glance

Black Obsidian is naturally occurring volcanic glass formed when silica-rich lava cools too quickly for a regular crystal structure to develop.

Material context

Obsidian is a glass rather than a mineral species with a repeating crystal lattice. It is commonly dark, glossy and capable of conchoidal fracture. Colour, inclusions, translucency and surface texture vary with formation and processing.

Dyed glass, manufactured glass and other dark materials can resemble Obsidian. A seller should state the basis for identity, treatment and locality rather than relying on colour alone.

Care and practical use
